The International Exhibition (Exposition Universelle) opened in Paris today (14th April 1900 to 12th November 1900) at Champ de Mars, Trocadéro, Bois de Vincennes, Esplanade des Invalides. The exhibition, held to celebrate the new century, is the biggest ever seen in Europe. It was officially opened by the President of France, Emile Loubet, who, in his address, called for world peace. The exhibition is viewed by the world as a sign that France is determined to assert its imperial power.

The International Exhibition (Exposition Universelle)  displayed, in view of over 50 million people, many machines, inventions, and architecture that are now nearly universally known, including; escalators, the Eiffel Tower, Ferris wheels, Russian nesting dolls, Diesel engines, talking films, and the telegraphone.

The exhibition features “palaces” and outstanding attractions from every major nation. This is the third international exhibition (Exposition Universelle) to be held in Paris: the first was in 1878 and the second in 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was built. Later this year, in July, Paris is also due to host the Olympic Games.

More than 48 million visitors attended this International Exhibition and 530 acres occupied by various industries.
